Photos

In this section you'll find a selection of photographs showing incorrectly marked and signed bus lanes.
Following these are diagrams of signs and roadmarkings.

Photo A: Glentworth Street London NW1. - Bus lanes must stop at least 10 meters before a minor left turn. This one, like many in London does not.

Photo C: Marylebone Road London NW1. Bus Lanes must be at least 4 meters wide to allow a bus to overtake a cycle without encroaching on the next lane. This Bus Lane is just 2.7 meters wide.

Photo D: Gloucester Place London NW1. This Bus Lane goes straight across a permitted left turn.

e
Photo E: Marylebone Road London NW1 - As the Bus Lane here does not stop short of the junction the car has to slow down in the next lane and cut across at 90 degrees to avoid entering the Bus Lane.

Photo B: Marylebone Road London NW1 Bus Lanes must be wide enough for a taxi or Bus to pass a cyclist without encroaching on the next lane. The minimum should be 4 metres yet this Bus Lane is just 2.7 meters wide.

Photo G: Marylebone Road London NW1 Bus Lanes must be wide enough for a taxi or Bus to pass a cyclist without encroaching on the next lane. The minimum should be 4 metres yet this Bus Lane is just 2.7 meters wide.

Baker Street London NW1. Incorrect signage and road markings. Here a bus lane that is operational for some of the day suddenly becomes operational for 24 hours a day - therefore catching out motorists. However the rules are clear in that this should be a new bus lane with a 1:10 taper commencement but all TFL have done is insert a small section of dotted line.

Marylebone Road London NW1. Camera's like these sited high up on poles rake in thousands for local authorities ofetn from silly minor transgressions of the rules.

Baker Street London NW1. These are the old style film bus lane camera's. which are still in use.The film has to be replaced often and then an officer looks through the film for prohibited vehicles using the Bus Lane.

These camera signs must be present where enforcement is carried out.

Transport for london do not mark their Bus Lanes in accordance with the guidance issued by the department of transport. Bus lanes should be set back from junctions but they are not in many cases. Many adjudicators decisions have criticised TFL for their poor bus lane markings and upheld appeals against them. This is the type of dangerous manouvre which vehicles have to make in order to not receive a fine.

Marylebone Road - Straight across the path of a taxi in order to avoid a £120 fine. These dangerous markings are a disgrace

Just waiting for you to make a mistake!

Did you know that in the year ending 2005 transport for London spent £20m on installing CCTV camera’s and projected that they would receive £23m in fines. Now that’s a good investment!
